Imagine that whenever you die, you fall asleep in the same place on the shore of an exotic island. This is the main idea of the game, where our hero Colt is trapped inside an infinite loop, and he wants to get out of it anyway. Why does it become every day to repeat the events of the same day over and over again, what is the secret and what is really happening on this island. If you are a fan of time travel stories and love games with mysterious events, this game will grab you from the beginning, as you did with us.
Arkin Studio, which developed the game, was previously known for its beloved game Dishonored, and since then the fans have been waiting for their next mega project. Deathloop at first looks like a first-person shooter, but it has a lot of cool ideas. In the beginning, it’s a first-person shooter based on missions, so if you’re a fan of this approach, you’ll find a lot to love here. The missions range from killing and assassination missions, or searching for information and investigation.
This is not a game of stages, but rather a game of thinking, investigation and experiments. Each time you play, you may discover something new that draws you to go and investigate. The game has only four maps, but each map will vary according to the time of the day, as the game offers four different periods, which are early morning, noon, afternoon, and finally evening, but what is the importance of dividing the game into periods?
This is what makes the game really special, as depending on your task you may need to go to a certain area during a certain time of the day, because it may be the only time that allows you to carry out the task. For example, a certain door may be open during that period for some reason, or a certain person may be visiting a certain place during that period. The game will excite you in the way it breaks down and presents the story, the more missions you complete, the more you discover new details that will make you put more hours into the game.
The game also includes a multiplayer mode that resembles the invasion style of the famous Dark Souls series. The second character in the game is called Joanna, and for some reason she tries to kill you every time she appears, she does not want you to break the cycle of time that you were locked in for some reason, and this is one of the puzzles of the wonderful story. In any case, you can play as Joanna, as you enter other people during their single play and eliminate them, and some of them break the cycle.
There are some rather annoying aspects of the game that could have really been avoided. For example, every mission after completing it requires you to return to the starting place to move to the next period, and although the stages are small and the distances traveled are not large, but in some circumstances it was annoying, so I wished I could finish the period from anywhere on the map. The second point is that I sometimes felt that the tasks were divided too much, especially with visiting the same place so often, then to cross the entire map to read a paper and then go back to the starting point would seem a rather boring task.
This is one of the games that I can’t talk about in much detail, as I may easily burn the story to you, so let’s stop here to talk about the details of the gameplay system. Death Loop offers beautiful graphics and a distinct artistic style, which is complemented by the wonderful music tracks and voice acting for the characters. The menus of the game may seem complicated at first, but with a little progress in the game everything will become clear, and you will need the menus here to understand the story of the game to a greater extent.
I have to say that Arkin Studio delivered a unique and unique game as expected of it from the start. The way the time-travel concept has been employed here is fantastic and brings a new flavor to the world of video games. The game may not be liked by everyone, and so are the stories and time-traveling games in general, but if you know that this is the source of your fun, do not hesitate to go through it.
