When the developer loses his memory and gets out of balance in the digital realm, when the Red House Knights start wreaking havoc everywhere and all plans to stop them fail and options run out, then we summon Narita Boy! This hero from another world will go his long journey through the dark forests and through the deserts of the Yellow House, passing through the cities of the Blue House to defeat the forces of evil and restore balance to the kingdom in an exciting, emotional and perhaps comical journey at times, so are you ready for that adventure? so let’s go!
The world of Narita Boy is inspired by the computer and its characters are the basic programs and pieces that make up the computer. The digital kingdom consists of 3 houses: the red house, yellow and blue house, and the kingdom faces imminent danger after the red house magician referred to as “he” erased the memory of the developer and sent his armies To destroy the digital kingdom and its other homes, the “motherboard” fulfills the prophecy and summons the human hero “Narita Boy” to extract the “digital sword” and begin his desired journey to restore the developer’s memory and save the digital kingdom. The game’s story is entertaining because of the strange characters that you will meet and that it is based on actual pieces and programs. In the computer, just as the world was portrayed in a different way than you might expect, instead of an experience of a modern and digital character, we find in Narita Boy a world with a wondrous religious character that sanctifies the role of some elements of the computer and narrates their role in it in an exciting way mixed with imagination and we find an emotional dimension in the story also when Freeing you of the developer’s memories and learning about its upbringing, in addition to some comedy here and there.
The game brings us very beautiful pixelated graphics with the advantage of the movement of characters and the movements in the background of the screen smoothly and precisely, and the image is displayed as if you were playing on a computer screen in the eighties to enhance the classic character of the experience, something we find also in the music, which brings us very beautiful electronic melodies.
All you need to defeat the Red House armies is the “digital sword”. You will initially reach a limited number of its capabilities and as you travel around the kingdom you will get various upgrades that allow you to access more of its abilities, the game tends to be more difficult in the challenge it presents. And it basically depends on knowing the behavior of each of your opponents, as each enemy you will meet has one attack (except for the leaders) and each attack has a specific loophole that must be exploited to defeat that enemy, the battles are not one of the game’s strengths and its main disadvantage is that it is primitive and lacks the elements that keep it. Dynamic and fun with the passing of the hours, you are waiting for the opponent to attack and you respond to his attack appropriately.
There are many leaders that you will meet on your journey, and the same concept that is used against the usual enemies applies to the leaders, as you try to survive the attack and know its loophole, but the bosses have many attacks and they become more dangerous when you approach them to victory, something you know through the soundtrack and the leader’s health indicator Which appears in the form of a heart beating in the corner of the screen and while some of the bosses’ confrontations were entertaining, many of them are chaotic, which is reflected in the confrontation of the usual opponents as well when you confront a number of them at the same time.
The game is similar in structure to the MetroidVinia games, so when you reach a certain area, you will need keys to reach your next goal with a new obstacle behind each key, which prompts you to search in the surrounding environment to obtain the next upgrade and bypass the new obstacle as you will find a new type of enemies that you will need to upgrade to defeat Unlike the MetroidVinia games, Narita Boy is a bit linear as it does not allow its world to bifurcate greatly, as every region is forked and requires you to explore to a certain extent in order to extend the life of the experience, which is something the game has succeeded in implementing without making it clear, but you are not here to return to any region yet Finish your mission on it and leave, as it does not provide you with a map of the world due to its linear nature.
Despite the attempts that we have mentioned to keep the experience varied, the primitive nature of the battles prevents this and the feeling of repetition will become present with the passage of time not only because of the battles, but because of the need to go through the same steps in each region as well. You know that your goal will meet you as soon as you enter the area, but you have to explore what surrounds you. This is the aim of the rooms and other methods to find the appropriate way to overcome the obstacle that stands between you and your goal.
The experience does not have many secrets to discover, and the only collectible element is the floppy disk that contains a backup copy of the first developer’s memory, which was divided into 4 pieces that were distributed throughout the digital kingdom, and in case you want to get all the pieces, we advise you to explore all areas carefully As we mentioned, it is not possible to return to any area after completing its last tasks and leaving, the experiment progressed about 10 hours, taking into account your wish in case you want to collect the floppy disk in consideration, and it is a good age for the experience that contains hints for us to get a second of it, the experience needed some improvement, especially In battles, but this did not prevent us from enjoying the adventure that presented an exciting world and an entertaining story, including its features and characters.
